THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister Saji Cherian has responded to filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s remarks against government funding for women and Dalit filmmakers. The minister stated that the government does not view the allocation of Rs 1.5 crore to newcomers as a loss. He added that more films should receive more funds, and there is nothing wrong with this approach.

“For 98 years, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have struggled to enter mainstream cinema. The government will provide them with support. Allocating more funds will ultimately bring returns. Prominent directors from Kerala will screen their films, and women will also receive the same consideration. Those who were given Rs 1.5 crore are themselves struggling to cope. It is in such a situation that some people are suggesting splitting the funds into three portions,” said the minister.

He also stated that government financial support for films would be integrated into the state’s film policy. Responding to remarks made by lyricist Sreekumaran Thampi regarding the Hema Committee, Saji Cherian assured that those who filed complaints with the committee would receive full protection.

“We will collectively discuss changes required in the film industry. The job security of junior artists is a serious concern. There must be proper wages, breaks, meals, and regulated work hours. We have learned that discrimination exists even in food arrangements, and this issue will also be addressed in the film policy,” he added.
