KOCHI: A newly installed entrance gate at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor collapsed on Friday evening, raising serious concerns regarding the quality of recent renovation works.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. at the stadium’s entrance facing Ernakulam Banerjee Road. According to preliminary reports, the structure, which serves as a passage between the stadium and the nearby metro station, failed to bear its own weight, causing it to detach from its mounting clamps and collapse.
The gate was part of an extensive renovation project undertaken ahead of a highly anticipated football match featuring the Argentine national team. The facility is currently under the supervision of a private sponsor following a handover process that has drawn significant scrutiny.
Allegations have surfaced suggesting that the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA)—the legal owner of the stadium—transferred management to the private entity without adhering to standard regulatory protocols. Critics are now calling for a formal inquiry into the structural integrity of the recent upgrades and the transparency of the handover agreement.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the structural failure or potential liability.
