KOCHI: A container ship has capsized in the Arabian Sea around 38 nautical miles off the Kochi coast. The Coast Guard is continuing its efforts to rescue the crew members. 21 crew members have been rescued so far. The vessel, identified as MSC ELSA 3, was en route from Vizhinjam to Kochi when it overturned. It is reported that there were 24 people on board. Indian Navy's Dornier helicopter has also joined the rescue efforts.
The ship was supposed to arrive in Kochi tonight at 10 PM and then continue to Thoothukudi. Currently, the vessel is lying tilted in the sea near the Kerala coast. It is reported that the containers on the capsized ship hold marine gas oil and very low-sulfur fuel. The State Disaster Management Authority has warned the public not to touch any containers that may wash ashore, as they contain hazardous materials. People are also advised not to go near the cargo.
The Disaster Management Authority issued the warning after receiving information from the Coast Guard. People should inform the police or call 112 if any containers are spotted on the shore. Authorities have emphasised the need for strict vigilance along the coast. According to State Disaster Management Member Secretary Shekhar Kuriakose, around six to eight containers are believed to have fallen into the sea.
