NEW DELHI: National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) disclosed alarming statistics revealing that India witnessed an average of 78 murder cases daily in 2022. Uttar Pradesh led the states with the highest number of 3491 registered murders, followed by Bihar (2930), Maharashtra (2295), Madhya Pradesh (1978) and Rajasthan (1834).

The report highlighted that disputes accounted for 9962 cases, while enmity led to 3761 murders and 1884 cases were linked to property theft. Among these cases, 8125 victims were women and nine were transgenders with the rest being men.

The NCRB emphasized a significant reduction in murder cases in Uttar Pradesh compared to previous years, especially when considering the population proportion. The report also noted that 95.4 percent of those killed were adults.

On a per lakh population basis, Jharkhand (4), Arunachal Pradesh (3.6), Uttar Pradesh (1.5), Bihar (2.3), Maharashtra (1.8), Madhya Pradesh (2.3) and Rajasthan (2.3) reported varying murder rates.

Delhi, among Union Territories, registered 509 cases while states like Sikkim, Nagaland, Mizoram, Goa and Manipur recorded relatively fewer murder cases. The NCRB's findings underscore the urgency for preventive measures and robust law enforcement to curb the rising trend of murders in the country.
