NEW DELHI: The central government has prohibited the export of onions till March 31, 2024. The Centre took the action after the price of onion soared high in the market following crop failure in states, including Maharashtra.
Earlier, the onion prices had risen sharply. However, the Centre took the initiative to control onion prices in the wake of elections in five states. It must be noted that the decision to prohibit the export of onions was taken in the context of the general elections to be held next year. Onion is a major ingredient in most of the dishes in the country. Hence, the rise in onion prices will adversely affect the lives of common people. This prompted the Centre to prohibit the export of onions.
