KOZHIKODE: After winning gold, Akshaya’s dream of having a home of her own is set to become a reality. Businessman Bobby Chemmanur took the initiative to build a house for G. Akshaya, who won the gold medal in the 3,000-meter race for senior girls at the State School Sports Meet. Minister for General Education N. Samsudheen announced this on Thursday. Akshaya is a Plus Two student at RPM HSS, Panangattiri, in Palakkad.
Recently, ‘Kerala Kaumudi’ published a report detailing the hardships faced by Akshaya, who lives in a one-room hut on a relative’s land. The report, titled "Scrambling for Gold; Now Akshaya Needs a Home," caught the attention of the concerned authorities, prompting action. The Minister said Bobby—who is currently in Vietnam—called to inform him that he would provide a house for Akshaya. The Minister added that further details would be discussed and finalised once Bobby returns to Kerala.
Akshaya belongs to a family of five with parents and two siblings. Her sister Archana was born with a heart disease. Brother Akhil is asthmatic. Mother Soumya is no longer able to work after falling ill. The meagre income of her father, Guruvayoorappan, a labourer, is the sole source of support.
The previous year, Akshaya had her eyes on gold after being inspired by the former education minister's announcement of a home for the homeless for gold winners. However, an unexpected injury proved a villain, and Akshaya had to settle with silver.
" I ran not for any medal, but for a home of my own. I thank the state government and Bobby Chemmannur Sir for coming forward with help," said Akshaya.
