Eight dead in heavy rains, widespread damage; death due to electrocution, falling into water bodies and trees falling

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Eight people died in various districts due to rain in the state. One person is missing. During the three days of rain, 97 houses partially collapsed, one house completely collapsed and there was extensive crop damage. 72 families were relocated to 13 relief camps.

Molly (42), a native of Vithura Tholicode, died after a tree fell on her car near Vazhayila, Thiruvananthapuram. Sulochana (54) and her son Ranjith (31) natives of Palakkad Vadakkanchery Kannambra died when the wall of their house collapsed. Sulochana, who was bedridden, and her son lived in a one-room house. The accident happened on Tuesday morning. They were asleep when the tragedy happened. Their bodies were found yesterday morning by locals who saw the collapsed house.

Locals recovered the body of Yusuf, a native of Alanellur, who went missing in Velliar on Saturday night. Puthanveetil Rajesh went missing in Mutukunnipuzha, Palakkad. Rajesh went missing while picking coconuts. K Chandrasekaran (60) died after falling into a waterhole on his way home after painting in Kannur. The body was found yesterday morning. Kunhamina, a native of Mattanur, was found dead in a well in the field. Kunhamina had gone to the field to pick banana leaves for cooking.

Reji (48) who went to cut grass in Tiruvalla and Sudhan in Wayanad died after being electrocuted by a broken power line. The fire force rescued a family of four, including a woman, who was stuck on a rock in the middle of the Chittoor river in Palakkad.

Low pressure likely again

  1. The Meteorological Center said that low pressure is likely again in the Bay of Bengal. After the low pressure over Odisha formed over Bay of Bengal weakens, a low pressure may form again over northwest Bay of Bengal on July 19. In the next five days, the rain will be heavy in North Kerala.
  2. Orange alert today in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Yellow alert today in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad districts.
  3. Fishing ban will continue in Kerala Karnataka Lakshadweep coasts. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Center has informed that there is a possibility of the Kallakadal phenomenon and high waves on Kerala coast within 24 hours.
