P Jayachandran, who won the National Film Award for Best Playback Singer once, received the Kerala State Award for Best Playback Singer five times and the Tamil Nadu State Award four times. Fondly known as the Bhava Gayakan, Jayachandran won his first Kerala State Award in 1972 for the song 'Neelagiriyude Sakhikale, Jwaalamukhikale' from the film Panitheeratha Veedu. The song was composed by MS Viswanathan. It was MS Viswanathan who introduced Jayachandran to Tamil cinema in 1973. In 1985, Jayachandran won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song 'Shivashankara Sarva Sharanya Vibho' from the film Sree Narayana Guru, with music composed by G Devarajan.
Jayachandran's first Tamil song was 'Thanga Chimil Pol' from the 1973 film Manipayal. In 1978, he won the Kerala State Film Award again for the song 'Ragam Sreeragam'. He garnered numerous state government recognitions in the ensuing years.
He won awards for songs like 'Praayam Nammil' from the film Niram, 'Neeyoru Puzhayaayi' from Thilakkam, and 'Njaanoru Malayali' from Jilebi. In 2021, he was honoured with the JC Daniel Award. P Jayachandran passed away at Amala Hospital in Thrissur after battling cancer for a long time. Jayachandran began his journey in film music in 1965 with the song 'Oru Mullappoomalayumaayi', penned by P. Bhaskaran and composed by Chidambaranath, for the film Kunjali Marakkar. He sang over 15,000 songs across Malayalam, Tamil, Kanada, Telugu, and Hindi.
