Sathyan's 'Athmasakhi' turns 70 today; legendary actor's first film was released on August 17, 1952

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It has been 70 years today since Malayalam's immortal actor Sathyan graced the silver screen. Sathyan's first film 'Athmasakhi' was released on August 17, 1952 (Chigam 1). Produced by P Subramaniam under the banner of Neela Productions and directed by GR Rao, the film is also the first film of Merryland Studios. The Tamil version of the film was released on September 13.

After Athmasakhi, Sathyan acted in films such as Thiramala, Lokaneethi, Ashadeepam and Snehaseema. However, it was Neelakuyil, which got released in 1954, that cemented his place in the minds of Malayalis. Sathyan acted in more than 150 Malayalam films and two Tamil films. Despite being haunted by leukaemia, Sathyan acted in the film 'Anubhavangal Paalichakal'. He died during the shooting of this film.

Manuel Sathyanesan Nadar aka Sathyan came to the film industry after working as a teacher, clerk, British army officer, police inspector etc. He began acting through amateur plays. He began acting through amateur plays.

Before Athmasakhi, Sathyan had acted in Thyagaseema, written by Kaumudi Balakrishnan, produced and directed by KMK Menon. However, the film got shoot stalled midway after the then district police superintendent Mary Arputham opposed Sathyan's acting in the movie while in service. Following this, Sathyan resigned from the police service and became active in cinema.
