PALLEKELE: Former champions Australia have been knocked out of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, marking the first time in history that the team has failed to progress beyond the group stage. From Group B, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe secured their places in the Super Eight stage. Australia’s defeats to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka proved decisive in their early exit. Australia needed Ireland to defeat Zimbabwe in their final group match to keep their qualification hopes alive. However, the match was abandoned due to rain, officially ending Australia’s campaign.
In the Super Eight stage, Zimbabwe have been grouped with India, South Africa, and the West Indies. The second group features Sri Lanka, England, and New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Pakistan can secure a Super Eight berth with a win over Namibia. If Namibia pull off a victory, the United States will claim the final remaining spot.
Australia’s early exit has come as a major surprise, as few had predicted the former champions would fail to reach the knockout stages. Their unexpected loss to Zimbabwe dealt a significant blow to captain Mitchell Marsh and his side. Cricket experts have also questioned Australia’s team selection, pointing out that Steve Smith was not included in a single match despite his strong performances in the Big Bash League.
