MUMBAI: Despite a golden run in ICC tournaments, the Indian cricket team’s leadership structure appears to be on the verge of a significant overhaul. While Shubman Gill has firmly established himself as the leader of the Test and ODI squads, questions are mounting over the future of T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav (SKY).

Reports suggest that even after leading India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title just last month, Suryakumar’s position is far from secure.

On paper, Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy record is flawless. Since taking over from Rohit Sharma in 2024, India has not lost a single series under his command. However, a stark contrast has emerged between his tactical leadership and his individual contributions with the bat.

  • Captaincy: Remains unbeaten in series play and recently secured ICC silverware.
  • Batting Slump: SKY has struggled for consistency for an extended period. His recent IPL 2026 form has been particularly concerning, with the batter finding it difficult to churn out the high-impact runs that once made him the world’s top-ranked T20I player.

Rising contenders

The pressure on Suryakumar is intensified by a new wave of talent and seasoned leaders waiting in the wings:

  • Shreyas Iyer: Emerged as the frontrunner for the role. Known for his "calm and tactically strong" leadership in the IPL and domestic circuits, Iyer is seen by the BCCI as a long-term solution for captaincy, provided he can stay clear of his recurring injury issues.
  • Sanju Samson: The Malayali star remains in the conversation, backed by his consistent captaincy experience and loyal following.

The BCCI is reportedly prioritizing long-term stability as they look toward the 2028 Olympics and future ICC cycles. While SKY’s captaincy has been dynamic, selectors are searching for a "permanent solution" that balances leadership with individual scoring.

The upcoming tours of Ireland and England in June and July will be the ultimate litmus test. If Suryakumar fails to regain his explosive batting form during these high-profile series, a leadership shift—potentially handing the reins to Shreyas Iyer—could become a reality.

Winning trophies might not be enough to save SKY's captaincy if his bat remains silent. The next two months will decide if he leads India into the next era or passes the torch.
