Sexual assault, private videos and false promise of marriage; IPL wicketkeeper batsman arrested

KOLKATA: IPL star Abhishek Porel was arrested following a complaint made by a woman who alleged sexual assault by the cricketer. The arrest was based on a complaint by a woman, a native of Mogra in Hooghly district and a dental college student.

The two met through social media in 2023 and fell in love. In the meantime, the woman alleged in her complaint that Abhishek forced her to intercourse by promising marriage. The woman also alleged that the star, who recorded private footage on his mobile phone, told her not to speak about it or threatened sharing the videos on public domain.

Based on the complaint, Calcutta High Court Justice Saugata Bhattacharya directed the Magra police in Hooghly to investigate and take further action. The court had also ordered the seizure of Abhishek's electronic devices. The police registered a case against the star under 19 sections, including non-bailable sections.

While the case was being considered today, the Magra police informed the court that they have arrested Abhishek. The police also said that the accused will be produced before the Chinsura court. Meanwhile, the player has denied all the allegations against him. Abhishek Porel, who is a wicketkeeper-batsman for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, is also an active member of the Bengal team in domestic cricket.
