Devdutt Padikkal scores maiden Test century; India make strong start against Sri Lanka in first test

GALLE: India finished the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in a strong position, reaching 288 for 2 in 73 overs. Devdutt Padikkal, who scored his maiden Test century and remained unbeaten on 131, was at the crease at the end of the day's play alongside Rishabh Pant (27 not out). India had won the toss and elected to bat.

Batting at No. 3, Padikkal made full use of the opportunity and brought up the first Test century of his career. He batted with ease and handled the Sri Lankan spinners confidently to reach the three-figure mark.

India suffered an early setback when Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out unexpectedly. Padikkal and KL Rahul then steadied the innings and built a strong partnership. At lunch, India were 101 for 1, with Rahul unbeaten on 32 and Padikkal on 35.

There was a brief interruption due to rain, but both batters completed their half-centuries in the second session and put India in a commanding position. However, Rahul had to retire hurt due to a muscle strain after the tea break.

Shubman Gill then joined Padikkal at the crease but was dismissed for 16. Gill was caught by Lahiru Udara off Prabath Jayasuriya, with India losing their second wicket at 236. Rishabh Pant then joined Padikkal and helped India maintain the momentum. Pant announced his arrival with a six over deep mid-wicket off Prabath Jayasuriya.

Rain interrupted play once again, but after the match resumed, Padikkal and Pant continued to bat confidently. At the end of the first day's play, India were in a strong position at 288 for 2 in 73 overs. India will look to build a big total when play resumes on the second day.
