MUMBAI: The high-profile homecoming of Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the 2024 IPL season was met with immense anticipation. Having successfully led the Gujarat Titans after being groomed by MI, he was brought back by the franchise management and handed the captaincy. However, the decision to unseat the legendary Rohit Sharma—who guided the franchise to five IPL titles—did not sit well with the fans.

Pandya has now completed his stint leading the Mumbai Indians across the recent cycles. His debut season as captain saw the team finish at the bottom of the table. While they managed a playoff berth last year, the former champions endured a dismal run this season, finishing a disappointing ninth.

Sources indicate that the Mumbai Indians management is deeply dissatisfied with the team's trajectory. Speculation is now rife that Pandya might part ways with the franchise, though neither the all-rounder nor the MI management has issued an official statement regarding his future.

Friction in the Dressing Room

National media reports suggest that the management has already communicated its decision to relieve Pandya of his captaincy duties. Pandya, who reportedly negotiated his return to MI on the condition of leading the side, is said to be highly disgruntled by the development. Sources close to the player suggest he has adopted an "all-or-nothing" stance: he will only remain with the franchise if he retains the captaincy.

Furthermore, Pandya has reportedly voiced grievances to the management, alleging a lack of support from senior figures in the squad. He pointed out that while he always offered 100% commitment to his captains while playing for India, he did not receive reciprocal backing from Mumbai's senior core during his leadership tenure.

Reports also highlight a breakdown in communication between Pandya and both senior and junior players. His on-field conduct with Rohit Sharma in 2024, coupled with a dressing-room altercation with youngster Tilak Varma, had previously raised eyebrows. Tensions reportedly simmered further this season following an exchange with premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Ultimately, a combination of underwhelming results and strained player relations has left Pandya cornered.

The all-rounder now faces two distinct choices: reconcile with a non-captaincy role as a senior player, or cut ties with the franchise.

Rohit Sharma to anchor the transition

When it comes to Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma remains the undisputed cornerstone of the franchise. After taking the reins in 2013 and stepping down in 2023, Sharma orchestrated a golden era, delivering five silverware finishes in ten seasons.

As MI looks to transition past the Pandya captaincy era, the management has reportedly handed the keys of this transition to Sharma. National media outlets, quoting a senior club official, reveal that the management has granted Rohit full autonomy to choose or endorse the next captain.

"Whoever takes over the mantle next will do so with the complete backing and blessing of Rohit Sharma," a source privy to the development stated.

The frontrunners for the leadership role include India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and young batsman Tilak Varma. Additionally, there are murmurs that the Mumbai Indians might consider bringing back wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan—who currently plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad—in a potential leadership capacity.
