Indian origin doctor jailed in US for placing hidden camera in staff bathroom

WASHINGTON: A court has found an Indian-origin doctor identified as Advait Deshmukh guilty of placing a hidden camera in the staff bathroom of a hospital. He was sentenced to six months in prison. The court also extended his probation period by three years. The court found him as a sex offender and also ordered him to seek mental health treatment, according to the sentencing guidelines.

The incident came to light when a mobile phone was found hidden in a public bathroom at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Ohio. When a witness tried to remove the mobile phone, Advait claimed that it belonged to him. The shocking information came to light when suspicious employees filed a complaint.

Based on the complaint, the police, who investigated, found about 80 nude photos. Later, a detailed investigation revealed that these photos were taken in February and May 2025. When talked to the women in the photos, it was found that they were not taken with their consent. Since there are indications that similar visuals have been captured since 2018, the police believe that there may be more photos and victims.

At the time of the crime, Deshmukh was a third-year medical resident at the University of Toledo. He was specialising in endourology and urologic oncology. But after his cell phone was found in the bathroom, the University of Toledo placed him on mandatory leave and, following an internal investigation, decided not to renew his residency appointment. Advait apologized to the victims before the court sentenced him.
