Trump promises $5,000 for every adult if Republicans win election

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has promised to give $5,000 (Rs 4,78,067) to every adult American citizen if his Republican Party wins the midterm elections in November. He said the money would have to be spent entirely within the US.

Trump also said the war with Iran would end by the time the election is over. However, he did not explain how the government would raise the money for the proposed payout. The plan would require at least $1.3 trillion and would also need approval from Congress.

The Democratic Party criticised Trump’s promise, calling it equivalent to a bribe. However, his supporters argued that the announcement was not legally wrong and amounted to a political promise under federal law.

The US midterm elections are held to elect members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, among other lawmakers.
