BOGOTA: Film stars trying their luck in politics is an often-witnessed practice in all parts of the world. However, when it comes to taking the road less travelled in politics, Latin countries are at the forefront. In Colombia, a former adult performer, Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, was sworn in as a Senator.
Known by her stage name Amaranta Hank, the newly sworn-in senator rose to popularity after raising the issues of adult entertainment workers and advocating for their rights.
According to Colombian media, Ortiz will represent the Norte de Santander region of the leftist Historic Pact bloc for the 2026-2030 parliamentary term. Considering the recent survey, the Historic Pact is the commanding political force in the country after securing more than 4.4 million ballots.
Ortiz, a former journalist turned adult performer, is nonchalant about discussions of her past and thinks that even adult performers should contribute meaningfully to the country’s finances. Ortiz wants the government to give legal recognition to the performers.
To the criticism that came her way on social media, Ortiz remarked that it is no crime for a former adult performer to aspire to enter elected office in the country. In the coming days, Ortiz will be a name to be looked upon when the politics of the Latin country gets into the limelight.
