WASHINGTON: United States President Donald Trump signed a sanctions bill that empowers the administration to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries—including India and China—that import oil and gas from Russia. The bill aims to cut off Russia's financial resources, specifically targeting its defence and energy sectors. US argues that restricting revenue will intensify pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
The bill was passed in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives with 262 votes in favour and 159 against. It also extends existing sanctions against Iran alongside those targeting Russia. Although the bill has become law, massive tariffs against India and China may not be imposed immediately. However, considering his erratic attitude, Trump could go for action any time he wishes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed this decision and expressed gratitude to US lawmakers. The bill was passed just as Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington next week.
Meanwhile, India clarified that it will continue to purchase Russian oil. India prioritises the energy security of its 1.4 billion people and will continue sourcing oil from diverse origins. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the country would safeguard its economic interests and trade, adding that it is monitoring the new US move.
