CHANDIGARH: A 67-year-old lawyer has been arrested for firing a shot at the wife of a landlord during an eviction drive. The incident happened at Sector 42 in Chandigarh. The accused identified as J P S Chadha, was arrested by the police. The victim identified as Manjinder Kaur, wife of Rajinder Singh, has been admitted in the hospital with bullet wounds on her face. Police said he shot her using a licensed gun.
Chadha has been living in this flat for 36 years. He had been involved in a long-standing dispute with the owner of the apartment. Following the court order, Manjinder Kaur reached the spot along with a court officer and the police on Saturday to vacate the flat. Despite being asked several times to come out of the flat, Chadha did not open the door. The authorities had the court's permission to break the lock and hand over the possession of the flat to the owner. Based on this, the police broke the lock. Meanwhile, Chadha, who had come to the balcony with a gun, opened fire on Manjinder. He tried to reload the bullet again, but the police forcibly subdued him.
However, Chadha's son alleged that there was no court order to take possession of the flat and that some people were trying to enter the house by force. They said that there is a stay order against eviction from the flat where they have been living for years and that the next hearing in the case is scheduled for August 3. However, the police are dismissing this. The police said steps to vacate the flat were taken based on the court order.
