AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court has upheld the death sentence of the convicts in the 2008 Ahmedabad blast case that killed 56 people. The Gujarat High Court has upheld the death sentence of 38 convicts, including three Malayalees.
The convicts have been charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, declaring war against the country, sedition and attending in terrorist activities. The Malayalees sentenced to death are siblings Shibili and Shadulives of Erattupetta in Kottayam, and Sharafudeen of Malappuram.
The Ahmedabad blast case was one of the biggest trials the country has ever seen. A series of blasts took place in various places in Ahmedabad on July 6, 2008. About 22 blasts took place in places including hospitals. In the incident, 56 people were killed and more than 200 were injured. The trial court had sentenced 38 Indian Mujahideen activists to death and 11 to life imprisonment. This verdict has now been upheld by the Gujarat High Court. The defense is moving to appeal against this verdict in the Supreme Court.
