CHENNAI: Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has resigned from the primary membership of the party. BJP national president Nitin Nabin has accepted Annamalai's resignation. News of him leaving the party had earlier emerged following the poll debacle in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Reports say that Annamalai will clarify his political stance in a debate to be held on social media this afternoon. There are also rumours that he will work with Rajinikanth.
Annamalai, who has been staying in Delhi since Monday, announced his decision to leave the party after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Nabin and national organization general secretary B L Santhosh. There are indications that he has also sought time to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi before returning to Chennai.

‘I am looking forward to meeting all of you through social media to share my thoughts with you and have a face-to-face and open debate,’ Annamalai wrote on social media after resigning.
Kuppusamy Annamalai, a famous IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre, entered politics after resigning his job. Known as 'Singam' among his fans, he gained a lot of attention in Tamil Nadu politics in a short time.
Annamalai joined the BJP in 2020. The following year, the party appointed Annamalai as the chief of the Tamil Nadu BJP after the then state president L Murugan joined the ministry. However, the party could not make much progress in Tamil Nadu in the recent elections. It is believed that differences with the AIADMK, which is part of the NDA, also resulted in Annamalai's resignation.
