NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Commerce has decided to allow the duty-free import of 10 lakh metric tonnes of raw sugar in an effort to control rising prices. The imports will be permitted until October 31.
Sugar consumption is expected to rise during the upcoming festive season, including Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra and Diwali, when demand for sweets increases significantly. The government is also taking steps to prevent hoarding and black marketing during the period.
From September 1 to November 30, the Centre has directed those handling more than 10 metric tonnes of sugar per month not to hold stocks for more than 15 days. Sugar dealers will be allowed to maintain stocks only for up to 30 days.
The measures come amid concerns over rising sugar prices, which have also been linked to the impact of prolonged rains and dry weather on sugarcane cultivation.
