Delhi building that collapsed was 40-50 years old; death toll rises to three, rescue operations continue

NEW DELHI: The death toll has risen to three after a hostel building collapsed in Delhi. A large rescue team has been deployed at the site, and nine people have been rescued so far. Police said five of those rescued are in critical condition.

Delhi MLA Anil Sharma told the media that rescue workers have been receiving phone calls from people trapped under the debris. Rescuers remain in constant contact with those trapped as they try to locate and rescue them.

The five-storey hostel and PG building collapsed at around 1.30 pm on Sunday in Delhi's Satya Niketan area. The building was around 40 to 50 years old.

Located near Delhi University's South Campus, the building housed students from different states. Students of Motilal Nehru College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College and Sri Venkateswara College were among those staying there. Around 60 students are believed to have been inside the building.

Meanwhile, additional beds have been arranged at Delhi AIIMS in view of the scale of the accident. Healthcare workers who were on leave have also been called back to assist with the emergency. The injured have been admitted to the trauma department at AIIMS.
