Liftoff of Skyroot's Vikram-1 rocket

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: India reached a major milestone in space exploration today as the private rocket ‘Vikram-1’, developed by Skyroot Aerospace, successfully achieved its target orbit of 452 kilometres. The mission, a significant demonstration of private sector capability in the Indian space industry, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

The rocket ignited at 12:05 p.m. and reached the designated altitude 16 minutes after launch. The mission was initially scheduled for 11:30 a.m., but the countdown was paused at 11:25 a.m. due to unfavourable wind conditions and cloud cover. After safety parameters were cleared, the countdown resumed at 11:45 a.m.

High-Profile Presence

The historic launch was attended by ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan, former chairmen S. Somanath and K. Radhakrishnan, and astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla.

Shortly after the successful deployment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Skyroot CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana. The two spoke for eight minutes, during which the Prime Minister offered his congratulations on the mission's success.

In a statement following the event, the Prime Minister described the mission as "a historic new frontier for India's space journey," noting that the success would pave the way for further innovation in the field.

Experimental Payloads and Souvenirs

Vikram-1 carried several experimental payloads into orbit, including the 'Solaris S3' from Bengaluru-based startup Graha Space, the 'Embrace' space radio-hand experiment by Cosmo Serve Space, and Skyroot’s own 'ScopeSat.' The rocket also hosted a small technology experiment developed by the German company D-Orbit.

In addition to the technical cargo, the mission carried a variety of symbolic items. This included a postcard from the Prime Minister inscribed with the message "Vande Mataram," which was placed among hundreds of other messages submitted from around the world.

The rocket also carried congratulatory postcards from Union Minister Piyush Goyal, S. Somanath, and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, as well as miniature statues of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Sir C.V. Raman.
