NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to persuade Prime Minister Narendra Modi to agree to a parliamentary debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Rahul also shared a video highlighting what he described as differing positions taken by Amit Shah on discussing SIR in Parliament. He took a swipe at the Home Minister, saying such statements should not be made in a way that confuses the Prime Minister. "Persuade him to agree to an open debate with me on SIR. I am ready at any venue and at any time. There is no need to be afraid," Rahul wrote on X.
The video shared by Rahul shows Amit Shah making two seemingly different statements on the possibility of discussing SIR in Parliament. On December 10, 2025, while responding to allegations of vote theft in Parliament, Shah had maintained that SIR could not be discussed as a separate subject in Parliament since it fell within the Election Commission's jurisdiction. He had also pointed out that the Election Commission was an independent constitutional body. However, on November 5, 2026, Shah said the government was ready to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss SIR. Rahul Gandhi had previously challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an open debate on the issue as well.
