MADURAI: ‘Nanparkale (Friends). Can someone please order a box of sweets for me?’ — Veeramani, a native of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, never thought of the ramifications of this plea after he posted this reel on Instagram.
In that moment, craving sweets, Veeramani shared his address and phone number, expecting his followers to do him the good favour. Sweets soon reached Veeramani, and the Madurai native was more than happy to learn that the people on social media were caring and empathetic. However, alarms were raised after Milk, vegetables, clothes, a wardrobe, a TV, and a refrigerator started coming. Veeramani was clueless.
Albeit being someone who lacked expertise in social media, Veeramani was left stunned, knowing that the raining gifts were not free but COD (cash on delivery) items. Initially, Veeramani paid for and accepted everything.
To find an exit route from his muddle, Veeramani appeared on social media with a clueless face and requested people to stop ordering. Veeramani would go on to do many more videos requesting help, but to no avail. The slang and humour hidden beneath Veeramani’s desperate request left netizens in stitches. One comment said, “I haven’t laughed like this in years. I coughed and couldn’t stop the laugh. Entertaining as hell”
The pleading with people did not work as e-commerce agents started appearing in front of Veeramani’s house with new orders. To take things on a different plane, some pranksters even went to the extent of ordering a JCB excavator on COD for Veeramani. Others created accounts for him on matrimonial platforms adn organ donation sites. Knowing that the situation spiralled out of control, Veeramani left his house.
A military tank worth Rs 70 crore is already on its way to Veeramani’s house. He has around 200,000 followers on Instagram. Online delivery agents are furious over orders getting cancelled every time. Some rated the Veeramani prank as the best thing to happen on Instagram in recent times.
Veeramani had previously attempted the same trick, requesting money from netizens to visit Kerala. That time, he was lucky enough as netizens pooled Rs 6000 for him, and Veeramani made it to Kerala. He received similar help on another occasion as well. However, the third attempt failed.
