VIJAYAWADA: YSR Congress President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed regret for supporting the 2023 Act—introduced by the Modi government—regarding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner. Jagan demanded that the appointment of Election Commissioners be impartial, and said there should never exist a scenario where those in power at the centre appoint the Election Commissioner.
“A student cannot appoint the person who should conduct the examination. Even if the examiner is entirely honest, the process will face criticism if they were not appointed by an impartial committee. The influence of the ruling party must be eliminated from the appointment of Election Commissioners and the Chief Election Commissioner. Previously, the YSR Congress supported this method of appointment. Now, we realise that a mistake was made, and we express our regret for having supported it back then." — Jagan Mohan
Jagan's statement sparked active discussions regarding the YSR Congress' next moves in national politics. This response comes at a time when the 'INDIA' alliance, led by the Congress, is intensifying its protests. The YSR Congress had previously sided with the BJP-led central government on several critical issues. Meanwhile, in Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party serves as an ally of the BJP.
Political analysts believe the YSR Congress is seeking new political equations at the national level following the severe setbacks it faced in the 2024 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
