KOLLAM: Ashwathi Achu (37), accused of pouring boiling water on an elderly woman over a property dispute, has been arrested. A native of Ayoor in Kollam, Ashwathi, the second accused in the case, was arrested from a flat in Thiruvananthapuram. Her daughter Amrutha (18), the first accused, had been arrested earlier.
The incident took place on September 26. Radhamani (61), a resident of Edamulackal in Ayoor, suffered burns after Amrutha poured boiling water on her face while she was sitting on the sit-out of her house. Radhamani sustained severe burns to her face and neck and remained hospitalised for several days. Ashwathi went into hiding following the incident.
On the night of the incident, Ashwathi had taken her daughter to her husband's house and left her there. Amrutha was subsequently arrested from that location. In her statement to the police, Amrutha reportedly said that her mother, Ashwathi, had boiled water, kept it in a vessel and instructed her to pour it on Radhamani.
Ashwathi, also known as Ashwathi Achu, has been accused in several cases, including a honey-trap case involving senior police officers, officials and political figures. Police had earlier found that she allegedly carried out fraud by using photographs of other women and creating social media accounts under different names.
