THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leader Cherian Philip expressed regret over a recent controversy at the party headquarters, Indira Bhavan, where he was seen attempting to hug party colleague Bindu Krishna during assembly election victory celebrations.
Speaking on the incident, Cherian Philip characterised the gesture as an inadvertent slip in situational awareness triggered by the euphoria of the election win. He extended an apology to the public for any perceived impropriety arising from his actions, which occurred in full view of the media.
"If my actions of embracing colleagues regardless of gender in front of journalists and cameras caused any offence, I request the public to forgive me," Cherian Philip said, adding that there was absolutely no malice or ulterior motive behind his behaviour.
The veteran leader noted that his colleagues had quickly defended his intentions. On the day of the incident, Mahila Congress President Jebi Mather MP described the gesture as a "paternal expression of affection." Bindu Krishna and senior leader Shanimol Usman also subsequently dismissed allegations of misconduct, terming the interaction completely natural.
"They are all like younger sisters to me, and we have known each other for years," Cherian Philip said, noting that he had since interacted warmly with them at Indira Bhavan in the presence of the Chief Minister.
The leader also opened up about his personal life and severe health challenges, responding emotionally to a social media backlash that he said had cost him days of sleep. Cherian Philip revealed that he suffered debilitating spinal and spinal cord injuries due to political persecution half a century ago, which left his lower nervous system damaged and caused muscle atrophy in his legs. He credited ongoing medical treatment for his ability to remain mobile.
Expressing deep distress over being mischaracterised on social media despite leading a solitary life, Cherian Philip thanked his well-wishers and supporters for standing by him during the ordeal.
