‘Prophet’s wife was a businesswoman; Islam I understand is not anti-women’: Binoy Viswam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam has criticised a statement by Samastha leader Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar, saying that the Islam he has read and understood is not anti-women.

“I have read that the Prophet’s wife was a businesswoman. Would someone engaged in such business never have seen another man? Saying that women should not go out or meet anyone in today’s times are also anti-women remarks. It is not good for any religion to go in that direction,” Binoy said.

Binoy also said there were no masters or slaves within the LDF. He said he was hopeful about the position taken by CPI(M) leader T P Ramakrishnan regarding the dispute over the post of Deputy Leader of the Opposition. “The CPI will never take a position that weakens the CPI(M)-CPI relationship,” Binoy said.

He said the view that the post of Deputy Leader of the Opposition should go to the CPI(M) as per convention was not the LDF’s position.

The dispute over the post would be resolved through discussions, he said, adding that the CPI did not want to make the matter a subject of public debate. Binoy also said there was no need for the CPI to convince anyone of its strength.
