'Establish Sports University in Kerala'; Governor Arlekar tells government

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor R.V. Arlekar urged the government to take the initiative to establish a sports university in the state. Sports universities can develop the talent and skills of the youth and make them determined and disciplined. The Governor was inaugurating the 'Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein' organised by the University of Kerala as part of the National Sports Day celebrations.

Higher Education Minister Roji M. John assured that the education and sports departments will join hands for a healthy young generation. Minister O. J. Janish asked students not to fall behind in sports even if they perform poorly in academics.

Vice Chancellor Dr Mohanan Kunnummal, who presided over the function, said that exercise is the prevention of lifestyle diseases.

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Awardee P.R. Sreejesh was the chief guest. Sportspersons K. M. Beenamol, K. M. Binu, S. Omana Kumari, Geethu Anna Jose, K. C. Lekha, Priya P.K., Gopinath, Anwin Antony and Anoop Ramaswamy were honoured by the Governor.

The full version of Vande Mataram was sung at the beginning and end of the ceremony. After the Vande Mataram, the national anthem was also sung. The full version was made mandatory following the instructions from the Lok Bhavan

In protest over singing the full version of Vande Mataram, the SFI march to the university ended in clashes. The police resorted to a lathi charge.
