KANNUR: Eleven people, including five prison officials, were injured following a violent clash among detainees held under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) at the Kannur Central Jail.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon inside Block 1 of the prison facility. According to jail authorities, the confrontation broke out between the inmates and escalated when a detainee identified as Jalaluddin, a native of Malappuram, used a blade to inflict self-harm.
Upon receiving information about the self-harm incident, prison officials rushed to the scene to intervene. However, the clashing inmates turned their aggression toward the responding security staff, leading to a physical altercation.
The conflict resulted in injuries to five prison officials and six inmates. All the injured individuals were subsequently shifted to a hospital for medical treatment. Jail authorities confirmed that none of the injuries sustained by the staff or the prisoners are considered serious. Officials further noted that detainees booked under KAAPA frequently engage in provocative behavior and attempt to instigate disruptions within the correctional facility.
