THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph on Friday said that Kerala has recorded a 1,100 MW increase in power demand this year. He added that both Kerala and the rest of the country are facing a severe power shortage, with below-normal rainfall significantly affecting electricity generation.
Speaking to reporters, the minister urged people to use electricity responsibly and avoid unnecessary power consumption. He also appealed to the public to switch off decorative and luxury lighting to help conserve energy.
"The power situation in the state is serious, and there is a shortage of electricity at the national level as well. Kerala is one of the country's highest electricity-consuming states in terms of population," he said.
According to the minister, Kerala's peak power demand has increased from 3,500-3,600 MW last year to 4,700-4,800 MW this year, marking an increase of around 1,100 MW in just one year.
He said the state generates only 17% of its total electricity requirement, with the remaining demand being met through power purchased from outside the state. The minister noted that he had also highlighted the issue in the Legislative Assembly.
"The shortage of rainfall across the country has affected power generation, while higher temperatures caused by the weak monsoon have pushed up electricity consumption. Consumers should use electricity only when necessary and avoid wasteful consumption. People should avoid using decorative lighting, refrain from using electric irons at night, and set air conditioners at 25°C to help reduce power demand," he added.
