THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the arrival of the monsoon, heavy rains are lashing the state. Orange alert has been issued in eight districts today. Orange alert has been issued in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Yellow alert has also been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki today. There is a ban on fishing on the Kerala coast.

Waterlogging has formed in many places in the state due to the rain. Heavy rain and wind were experienced throughout the day in the eastern region. The rain that started in the morning continued till late at night. As the monsoon is likely to intensify in the coming days, the rain is likely to continue. A coconut tree fell on top of a house in Punalur causing damage in the heavy rains and wind yesterday. The tree fell on top of Madhavanachari's house in Ashtamangalam Girija Bhavan, Punalur. The tiles of the roof and the asbestos sheets have broken.

Strong winds with a speed of 40 to 50 kmph, and at times up to 60 kmph, and bad weather are likely along the Kerala Lakshadweep coast. Therefore, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised fishermen from the Kerala coast not to venture into the sea till June 7. It is reported that isolated heavy rains will continue in the district till June 7 due to the influence of the cyclonic circulation prevailing over the Central Arabian Sea and the Karnataka coast.
