'This is just a beginning'; Opposition leaders welcome Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation

NEW DELHI: Opposition leaders have welcomed the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, calling it a victory for the students who led the protests over the NEET examination paper leak controversy.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi described the resignation as an important step towards reforming the country's education system. Congratulating students across India, he said he was proud of every young person who took to the streets to protect democracy and the Constitution.

"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to every student and young person who stood up for their rights. We are proud of all of you," Rahul Gandhi said in a post.

However, he added that two key demands still remain. He urged the Prime Minister to apologise to the students and the nation over the NEET controversy and called for action against those responsible for the alleged violence against students during the protests.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav also welcomed the development, calling it a victory for truth, justice and the fight for students' rights. He said it marked the defeat of what he described as the government's "lies, arrogance and tactics." Congratulating the students, he added that many questions surrounding the controversy remain unanswered and vowed that the country's youth would continue to demand accountability.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also reacted to the resignation, saying on X, "This is not a resignation; it is a revolution."

NCP leader Supriya Sule said Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation came after sustained pressure from peaceful protesters, students and the Opposition. She congratulated everyone who remained firm on the issue and said the resignation should not mark the end of the movement.

"We are demanding comprehensive education reforms and a detailed discussion on the NEET issue," Sule said.
