Kalamassery gangrape: Women’s Commission takes suo motu case, assures legal help to survivor

THRISSUR: The Kerala State Women’s Commission has taken a suo motu case in connection with the gangrape of a woman in Kalamassery. The commission has assured the survivor necessary legal help and counselling. They also informed that a proper police investigation into the case would be ensured.

Meantime, the police have recorded the survivor’s statement. She told the police that she was subjected to brutal sexual abuse by several people, including Sharanya alias Ammu. The survivor has identified all the four accused arrested in the case--Sreeraj, Jith Martin, Sharanya and Sanju.

The statement was recorded from the woman, who is presently undergoing treatment at Kalamassery Medical College, under the leadership of Thrikkakara ACP. She told police that Sharanya was the one who abused her the most. The investigation team has found that Sanju stood guard when the woman was being gangraped. The two are friends of Sreeraj, the prime accused in the case.

Kochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar said that the survivor is presently cooperating with the investigation. The commissioner added that based on the victim's statement of abusing her after drugging, the police have launched an investigation into the suspects' goonda links and the source of the drugs. He also clarified that, in the wake of the incident, they will consider making police clearance mandatory for spa employees.
