Kerala to procure satellite data; Rs 2.76 crore for development, disaster planning

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala will purchase high-resolution satellite data to aid development planning and the prediction of natural disasters. The highly accurate images and information will help identify disaster-prone areas, plan environmental protection activities and support disaster preparedness.

The Planning and Economic Affairs Department has issued a work order worth Rs 2.76 crore to Haryana-based M/s NeoGeoInfo Technologies Ltd for procuring the satellite data. Six crore has been earmarked for the purchase of satellite data.

The funds allocated under the PM Gati Shakti programme will be used to purchase the high-resolution satellite data. The data will facilitate digital mapping and accurate planning of roads, bridges and major infrastructure projects.

The Kerala e-Governance platform will use the satellite information to prepare accurate maps and geographical data required for various development projects and land-use planning in the State.

Four companies had expressed interest in supplying satellite data to Kerala. NeoGeoInfo Technologies Ltd quoted the lowest amount at Rs 2,76,31,593.

The government had earlier sanctioned six crore rupees to K.S.R.E.C. for implementing the Kerala e-Governance platform. A technical committee had recommended spending Rs 3.75 crore on the purchase of satellite data. A portion of the amount is now being utilised.

Crucial for early warnings and rescue operations

• Satellite imagery can be used to accurately identify low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding.
• Analysis of soil composition, terrain slope and changes in the land surface can help provide warnings about possible landslides.
• Land-use maps can help identify rehabilitation centres and plan rescue operations during disasters.
