NEDUMANGAD: A needle allegedly slipped from a dentist's hand during a root canal procedure and got lodged in the throat of a student before passing into her stomach. An X-ray later confirmed that the needle was inside her stomach. She was subsequently admitted to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for surgery. The student, Devisree, is the daughter of Seema of Vattakulam, Aruvikkara. She is a Plus Two student.
The incident occurred on the evening of October 31 during a root canal procedure at a private dental clinic in Aruvikkara. The needle reportedly slipped from the dentist's hand. The girl was taken by motorcycle to two private hospitals in Aruvikkara and Karakulam, where X-rays were taken. When the scans revealed that the needle had reached her stomach, her parent was informed. She was then shifted to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
The girl's mother approached the Aruvikkara police, seeking an investigation into the alleged medical negligence. However, she has complained that no case has been registered even a week after she filed the complaint. Meanwhile, the dental clinic authorities have reportedly put forward the unusual claim that the girl swallowed the needle herself. The Aruvikkara police said they would investigate the incident and take further action.
