ALAPPUZHA: The Women and Child Development Department will provide flats under the ‘Thanteyidam’ scheme to residents of welfare institutions who turn 18. The government has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the project. The Kerala State Housing Board will construct the flats in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts.
The funds have been sanctioned to provide flats to 10 beneficiaries recommended by the Women and Child Development Department. The scheme aims to provide safe accommodation in society for those who have lost their childhood due to circumstances beyond their control. The flats will be made available to children from government-run institutions or institutions receiving government assistance.
The scheme will support those who have their own income but continue to reside in welfare institutions or in hostels operating under the supervision of such institutions. Beneficiaries must be orphaned or have no land of their own. If a beneficiary dies without a spouse or children, the government will take back the flat.
A district-level committee has been formed to identify eligible beneficiaries. The process will be coordinated under the leadership of the Revenue Department, local self-government institutions and the District Planning Committee, among others.
The scheme, implemented in collaboration with the Kerala State Housing Board, will benefit many people who lack land and housing.
