Monsoon to reach Kerala today; Heavy rain in state, eight districts on orange alert

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that there is a possibility of heavy rain in Kerala today. An orange alert has been issued in eight districts today. Orange alert has been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur. The IMD has informed that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala today. There is also a possibility of rain with thunderstorms.

The IMD has announced an orange alert in the districts. The possibility of very heavy rain has been predicted in isolated places. The IMD defines Very Heavy Rainfall as rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

The IMD has announced a yellow alert in the following districts. The possibility of isolated heavy rain is predicted. The IMD defines heavy rainfall (ISOL H) as a situation where rainfall is between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Rainfall with thundershowers is expected. The IMD has informed that strong winds with a speed of 40 to 50 kmph are likely in isolated places in Kerala from tomorrow to 07/06/2026.

People living in areas prone to landslides, mudslides and flash floods should move to safer places as per the instructions of the authorities.

Those living in riverbanks and downstream areas of dams should also move to safer places as per the instructions of the authorities, anticipating the danger.

People in disaster-prone areas should definitely ensure that camps are opened in their area and move there during the day. For this, local bodies and revenue authorities can be contacted.

Due to the possibility of strong winds, those living in unsecured houses and those living in houses with weak roofs should be especially careful. Those who see the danger ahead should contact the authorities and move to safer places as a safety precaution.

During heavy rains, it is not permissible to cross rivers, bathe in rivers or other water bodies, go fishing or for other purposes.

Avoid unnecessary travel completely during heavy rains. Excursions to waterfalls, water bodies and hilly areas should be completely avoided until the rain warning is lifted.
Be especially careful when traveling on roads near water bodies. Be careful on roads under repair. The possibility of road accidents increases during heavy rains. Do not attempt to drive in areas where water bodies are overflowing.
