KOZHIKODE: It was supposed to be a foolproof plan to outsmart burglars, but a Beypore man’s attempt to safeguard his fortune ended up in the local landfill instead.
Terrified of thieves breaking into his house while he was away, Abdul Salam carefully tucked seven sovereigns of gold jewellery into a bundle of clothes inside his wardrobe before setting off on a solo vacation on May 16. In his rush to leave, he made one critical mistake: he forgot to tell his wife, Sabira.
The very next day, members of the Haritha Karma Sena, the local waste management task force, knocked on the door for their routine collection. Looking to clear out some clutter, Sabira grabbed the old bundle of clothes from the cupboard and handed it over, completely unaware that she was giving away a small fortune.
The devastating blunder only came to light later when Abdul Salam finally returned from his trip and asked about the jewellery. A frantic search of the wardrobe confirmed the family's worst nightmare—the gold was gone, hauled away with the neighbourhood trash.
Giving up all hope, the family assumed their life savings were gone for good. However, a glimmer of hope appeared on June 20 when the waste collection team returned to the Payyanakkal neighbourhood.
Abdul Salam desperately explained the mishap to the workers, who immediately leapt into action. The team tracked the route of the disposal truck to the Nellikode waste dumping yard and launched a frantic, needle-in-a-haystack search through mountains of garbage.
Against all imaginable odds, the honest six-member crew—Ibrahim Babu, Anisha, Nusaiba, Sefreena, Somlith, and Anandu—spotted the bundle and recovered the missing gold completely intact.
The jewellery was officially returned to a stunned and grateful Abdul Salam, his wife, and their two daughters, Fathima Fida and Aisha Sheika, turning a heartbreaking mistake into a miraculous celebration of community honesty.
