Nithin Raj suicide case: Main accused Dr Ram arrested from Karnataka

KANNUR: Dr M K Ram, the main accused in the suicide case of Nithin Raj, a student of Anjarakandy Dental College, has been arrested. Dr Ram was arrested three months after the investigation began. The crime branch arrested him from Kudagu in Karnataka and then brought him to Kannur.

The Supreme Court had rejected Dr Ram's anticipatory bail plea the other day. The crime branch team then intensified the investigation. There were hints that he was hiding at Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. However, the police later received information that Dr Ram was in Bengaluru. Following this, the crime branch had reached Bengaluru two days ago. He was nabbed after police stepped up surveillance, especially in Kodagu.

Nithin Raj's father said that he is happy hearing the arrest of Dr Ram and that his son would get justice only if the other accused in the case are also arrested and punished.
Nithin Raj committed suicide by jumping off the college building on April 10 this year. It is alleged that mental torture from the teachers led Nithin Raj to take the extreme step. Nithin Raj had earlier informed his family that Ram, the head of the dental anatomy department, was harassing him mentally.

The high court had criticized for not arresting Ram. The Supreme Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea and showered harsh criticisms against Ram. The court asked Ram's lawyer whether teachers should behave like this with students. The court also asked whether he had thought about the mental state of the students when they are humiliated in front of their classmates.

The court had termed the incident as cruel and inhumane. The court also said that teachers who commit such acts should understand the consequences. However, the lawyer appearing for Ram argued that there was no caste abuse and there was no evidence for it.
