Rain to gain strength in Kerala; yellow alert issued in eight districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain in Kerala for the next five days. A yellow alert has been issued in several districts due to the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall.

A yellow alert has been declared today in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. The weather department has predicted the possibility of heavy rain at isolated places. The IMD also said that isolated areas may receive thunderstorms and rain, along with strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.

Fishermen alert
The IMD said there is no restriction on fishing activities along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts today (20/07/2026). However, strong winds are expected in several sea areas.

On 20/07/2026, strong winds with speeds of 45 to 55 kmph, occasionally reaching up to 65 kmph, are likely over the central-west Arabian Sea, adjoining central-east Arabian Sea, northern Arabian Sea, southwest Arabian Sea, coastal areas of Somalia and Oman, central-west Bay of Bengal, south Sri Lanka coast, adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar and nearby regions.

On 21/07/2026 and 22/07/2026, similar wind conditions are expected over the central-west Arabian Sea, adjoining central-east Arabian Sea, northern Arabian Sea, southwest Arabian Sea, Somalia and Oman coasts, Gujarat coast and Gulf of Mannar.
