PARAVUR: The Ernakulam Additional Motor Accident Claims Tribunal awarded Rs 1,81,56,250 to Mary George (48)—a lead engineer at Nest Information Technology in Kochi and a resident of 'Sreelekha' in Palarivattom, Ernakulam—who underwent treatment for eight and a half months following a road accident.

The court further directed The New India Assurance Company to pay interest at a rate of 8 per cent per annum on the compensation amount, calculated from 2017 (the year the petition was filed), along with proportionate court costs.

The accident occurred on November 25, 2016, at 6:45 PM on the Seaport-Airport Road, near Infopark. While walking home after work, the petitioner was struck by an oncoming motorcycle, leaving her hospitalised with severe head injuries. She underwent treatment at various hospitals for 258 days and required four major surgeries. Due to a failure to fully regain her memory, she lost her job and has been unable to secure alternative employment. The court determined the compensation amount after taking these factors into consideration.

Advocate Kalathunkal Joy Paravur appeared on behalf of the petitioner.
