Selling popcorn for Rs 250 in theatres; Govt has limitations to intervene, says Minister Anoop Jacob

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob said the government has limitations to intervene in complaints regarding the exorbitant pricing of popcorn and bottled water in cinema theatres across the state. He said the issue has existed for a long time and added that charging excessive prices for bottled water is a serious matter.

‘Popcorn is being sold without being packed. If it were in packets, its weight and MRP could be checked. The department is presently examining whether the price list is displayed and whether products are being sold at the prices mentioned in those lists. Action will be taken if they are sold above the displayed price. We will also ensure that packaged products are sold at the MRP printed on the package.

Not allowing people to carry water from outside into theatres violates consumer rights and is also a human rights violation. There are people with health conditions who may need to drink water brought from home. It is not right to prevent them from carrying water. The practice should be allowed, and theatres should also refrain from charging exorbitant prices for bottled water. Drinking water is permitted even in examination halls and airports,’ said Minister Anoop Jacob.
