THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Mayor V. V. Rajesh confirmed that BJP state vice president and Sasthamangalam councillor R. Sreelekha had tendered her resignation, citing personal inconvenience. The Mayor said it was not the culture of BJP to lure people into the party by promising high positions. Meanwhile, it is reported that BJP State leaders and district heads are contemplating ways to ameliorate tensions and persuade Sreelekha to rescind her decision.
“Positions within the party are assigned based on an assessment of each worker's capabilities; this factor is taken into account for everyone. Sreelekha is not someone who yields to pressure from political parties. She has resigned, citing personal inconveniences.” The Mayor stated that the party leadership would take the necessary steps on this matter.
Sreelekha submitted her resignation letter to Thiruvananthapuram Mayor VV Rajesh on September 30. The information will also be conveyed to the District Collector shortly. Reports suggest that dissatisfaction with the BJP leadership is the reason for the resignation; however, Sreelekha maintains that the decision is due to personal reasons.
With the resignation, BJP faces a crucial challenge in the Thiruvananthapuram corporation. The number of BJP members has also dropped to 49. BJP Councillor Sugathan, arrested under the KAAPA Act, remains in jail. The BJP currently rules the corporation with the support of an independent member.
