For generations, the dosa has had a simple rule: tear off a piece, dunk it in sambar or chutney and eat. No ceremony. No fuss. Definitely no need for a crash course in fine dining. But apparently, there is now a five-star way to eat a dosa — and the internet isn't quite sure whether to laugh or ask for the bill.
A viral video doing the rounds on social media shows an etiquette coach demonstrating how a dosa should supposedly be tackled at a luxury hotel. And yes, your trusty fingers are nowhere in sight.
First, the dosa is folded neatly from both sides towards the centre. Then comes the serious business. A spoon is used to cut off a piece, which is carefully picked up with a fork before making its way to the mouth.
Because apparently, simply tearing off a piece with your fingers was too easy.
The video was shared by social media user Manas Muduli with a tongue-in-cheek caption claiming that when you pay ₹1,500 for a dosa at a five-star hotel, you are apparently not allowed to eat it with your hands. “Fork and spoon are compulsory!” he joked, calling the clip an “official training video” for eating dosa like a five-star guest.
The internet, unsurprisingly, was ready with its own menu of reactions.
Some found the elaborate dosa choreography hilarious, while others wondered whether luxury dining had finally gone a little too far. One commenter suggested that Indian food should be eaten the Indian way and Western food the Western way.
Another had a more ambitious suggestion: perhaps the next lesson could demonstrate how to eat a chicken lollipop with a spoon and fork.
Others, however, pointed out that there is no rule saying guests at five-star hotels must abandon their hands while eating dosa. In other words, the fork-and-spoon brigade may not actually be waiting at the door.
And that may be the funniest part of the whole affair.
The humble dosa, which has survived generations of hungry diners, has now apparently graduated to fine-dining etiquette school.
So, the next time you sit down with a plate of dosa, sambar and chutney, remember: you could eat it the traditional way.
Or you could fold it, reach for the spoon, summon the fork and eat it like the five-star guest you apparently paid ₹1,500 to become.
