School roof collapses in Kottayam, 33 houses damaged; extensive damage in Alappuzha too

KOTTAYAM: Heavy rain and wind caused widespread damage in Kottayam and Alappuzha. The roof of the Thalanad Vellani Govt. LP School building in Kottayam collapsed after a tree fell. The incident took place at 4 am yesterday. Fans, projectors, children's study materials, etc. were destroyed. Houses in the area were also damaged.

33 houses were damaged in Meenachil after trees fell. The BSNL tower installed on top of the building of St. Thomas College in Pala was blown down by the wind. The administration has issued a cautionary advisory in the hilly areas.

In Alappuzha, six houses were damaged due to heavy rain, wind and sea waves that began on Friday evening. The houses of Siyad and his brother Noushad in Haripad, Thrikkunnapuzha Kattasseril were damaged by the sea waves. Trees fell on the houses of Radhika, a native of Kuttanad Kainakari South, Geethakumari, a native of Thalavady, and Leela, a native of Ennakkad. All the low-lying areas in Alappuzha district were flooded. A meeting was held under the chairmanship of the District Disaster Management Authority Collector to assess the situation. The district received 44.8 mm of rain on Friday and Saturday.
