Major fire in Delhi restaurant; 20 killed, foreigners among dead

NEW DELHI: A major fire broke out at a restaurant in the national capital on Wednesday, killing 20 people and injuring many. The fire broke out at the Lemon Green restaurant in Malviya Nagar, Delhi at 8.50 am today. Most of the dead are foreigners. The fire brigade rescued 37 people who were in the restaurant. There were reportedly about 40 people in the five-storied building. The cause of the fire is unclear, officials said. The fire broke out in the basement of the hotel. Various fire departments have reached the spot and efforts are underway to douse the flames.

The Prime Minister has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the families of those killed in the accident. 'It is tragic that so many people lost their lives in the fire that broke out in Malviya Nagar, Delhi. We express our condolences to those who lost their loved ones. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. All possible assistance will be provided to the affected. Financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of the dead from the PMNRF. Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured,' said the office of the Prime Minister.

AAP leader Somnath Bharti also offered his condolences. ‘A major fire broke out in a multi-storied building in my assembly constituency, Hausrani, around 8.30 am today. There is a possibility of casualties. Most of them are South African citizens,’ Somnath Bharti said.

Eleven people injured have been admitted at the hospital. Police said the fire is under control and rescue operations had begun. A search was also launched for the remaining occupants of the restaurant.
