THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The remarks of director of general education that even students who do not know how to read alphabets get A+ in the SSLC exam ended in controversy, but there is a definite drop in standards.

In a question paper of 100 marks, a student has to write correct answers for just 10 marks. The remaining twenty marks required to pass will be given by the teacher in class through continuous assessment. If it is a question paper of 50 marks, correct answer of 5 marks is enough. The remaining 10 marks for passing the exam can by secured through continuous assessment. Before the the advent of grading system, one had to get 35% marks in the written exak to pass.

The demand for minimum marks in the written test has become stronger again. The government is interested in highlighting the success rate. Due to this, Kerala Syllabus students are lagging behind in the entrance examinations conducted for professional courses and graduate courses in central universities.
